You're wondering where to begin? What steps do you need to take and in what order? The answer is going to vary, depending upon the stage you and your family are in. There are two people you can employ to help you figure out your own work, these people are a family therapist and an ed therapist.

Whatever stage you are in, there are two important people who will make a significant difference in your efforts and experience. The first is a good Family Therapist, the second is an Educational Therapist. The first will help you manage expectations and have an impact on your family system. The second will help you make a decision about what you need to do to help your child, that includes, but is not limited to placement in a wilderness program. Don't go this process alone, find professionals to help you through this, you will be really glad you did.

Therapeutic & Educational Therapists are a good place to start. They will be your guide through a potentially complex array of choices and they've got knowledge and experience. Your Ed Therapist is your anchor throughout this experience and will help you choose a family therapist if you don't already have one, a wilderness program, a post wilderness plan, home plans, educational lawyers, should you need one. Ed Therapists actually go to the various programs and schools and visit.

Family Therapist your progress is dependent on your own work. Your family therapist is going to help you parents with your work while your child does his/her own work at wilderness. Your whole family system will progress most quickly when the parents take charge of their own change. Once your child graduates from wilderness you will rely on your family therapist to help you communicate with the next program or directly between you and your child. Wondering how to select a good family therapist? Find someone who works with "family systems" and word of mouth. This may be one of the most important steps you take in this entire process. Don't skip this step.

Insurance reimbursement assistance may be necessary. There are companies that specialize in helping you get the most out of your insurance. This is an expensive process and this can make the difference between it being possible or not for your family.

Denials Management companies, there are many out there. Your Ed Therapist will likely be able to make a recommendation.

Educate yourself and get to work. Your child is about to, or has embarked on a challenging process, it's time to allow him/her to get to work while you settle in to do your own. I can't stress enough how important it is for you to engage in some critical thinking around yourself, your child and your parenting style. You will get assignments from your child's wilderness program and your family therapist (hopefully). Do them.

Read as much as you can. We've compiled a list of helpful books. That's just a place to start. You may get assigned reading from the wilderness program or your therapist, also. There are podcasts that may be useful to listen to, we have found these very helpful.
